South Africa
2018
Our most recent visit to South Africa was in 2018. We stayed in the Sandton Sun Hotel in the bustling area of Sandton approximately 20 minutes from Johannesburg’s international airport. The hotel is close to many bars and restaurants including the Marble restaurant which is a unique experience described as a celebration of quintessential South African fare, it was so good that we had to go twice!

We played Royal Johannesburg and Kensington (West and East) and the stunning Glendower GC. All are ranked in the top 25 courses in South Africa and provide excellent facilities for practise, play and pre and post golf eating and drinking. The courses are steeped in history and have played host to many iconic amateur and professional events including South African Opens and South African National amateur championship. The presentation of the courses was superb and all agreed that the greens on all three courses were the best that they had ever putted on. The group particularly enjoyed how far the ball was flying in Johannesburg due to the high altitude….everyone recorded the longest drives of their career this week!!
South Africa is a true long haul venue but the extra few hours on the aeroplane are definitely worth it! Travelling during the English winter means that you arrive in the southern hemisphere’s summer with all of the obvious benefits for golfers!!….sun, shorts/skirts, no waterproofs, fast greens and no mud! The outstanding food and wine at very reasonable prices add to the experience along with the African culture and wildlife both on and off the golf course. South Africa is a place that all golfers should definitely experience!!
